The Lamp of God Orphanage has been the beneficiary of many volunteers since it was founded in 2005. The contribution of volunteers has made it clear how important volunteers are, not only in aiding in the education of these children, but also in encouraging and inspiring them. It is with this in mind that we are endeavoring to make volunteering at The Lamp of God Orphanage as accessible to as many volunteers as possible.
The purpose of this document is to give you information to aid you in the decision making process to volunteer, while also giving you information that will make your time there as enjoyable and as memorable as possible. The testimonials on the website should give some insight as to what an incredible experience it is.
Qualifications Required
No qualifications are required to make you eligible to volunteer at The Lamp of God Orphanage. All that we ask is that volunteers are self-motivated and patient. You will find numerous roles within the school that you can fill and you will be encouraged to choose the one that suits you. Just being around the kids, and speaking English to them, is incredibly beneficial.
We recognise being able to read as the gateway to learning, we therefore encourage volunteers, with or without experience, to teach the kids phonics and basic reading. Information on how to do this is provided in advance but we encourage you to find further instructions and aid before make your trip.
There will also be kids who are struggling with basic mathematics. The teachers will be able to point these kids out to you and you can give them the additional assistance they desperately need.
Requirements
A letter of invitation will, in most cases, be required by you to obtain a Visa to enter Ghana. As you will be working with children you will need to provide two documents prior to being sent this letter. You need to provide a reference from your employer/school on letterhead and also a police check/character reference from your local police station.
While exceptions will be made it is encouraged that your time spent volunteering is at least four weeks. This is to enable us to balance the benefits of having a volunteer against the distraction to the kids of a new arrival.

What You Should Know

Internships are available from January to March and from May to June of each year. The actual dates depend on the starting dates of the school term.

Internships are ONLY available at the lamp of God orphanage campus in Aseswa in the Eastern Region of Ghana, where we run a school.

Internships will primarily involve teaching and assisting teachers in this school in the subject areas of Bible, Mathematics, English Language and Science.
